The base station controller, the mobile switching centre and the PSTN
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Held in the home location register, what happens when the network pages a handset and public switched telephone network.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does a base station controller do?
Why is a base station controller used rather than making every mast independent?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does a base station controller do?
Model answer
A base station controller manages a group of base stations. The controller allocates radio channels, controls handoffs between its cells and sets the transmit power the handsets use.
- 2
Why is a base station controller used rather than making every mast independent?
Model answer
A base station controller concentrates the radio management and the traffic of many masts, so each mast needs less equipment and the switching centre above is not burdened with second-by-second radio housekeeping.
- 3
What passes between a base station controller and the mobile switching centre?
Model answer
A base station controller passes call and data traffic from its base stations up to the mobile switching centre. Control and routing instructions pass back down the same link.
- 4
What does a mobile switching centre do?
Model answer
A mobile switching centre sets up, routes and clears calls. A call may be connected to another mobile, to a fixed line through the public switched telephone network, or to voicemail.
- 5
How does a mobile switching centre make it possible to call a moving subscriber?
Model answer
A mobile switching centre keeps a record of the area each subscriber is currently in, so an incoming call is directed to the right part of the network instead of being broadcast across the whole country.
- 6
What is held in the home location register?
Model answer
The home location register is the master database of an operator's subscribers, holding each number, the services that number is entitled to and the area in which the handset was last seen.
