Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Name the seven data protection principles.

    Model answer

The seven principles are lawfulness, fairness and transparency; purpose limitation; data minimisation; accuracy; storage limitation; integrity and confidentiality; and accountability.

  2. 2

What does the first principle, lawfulness, fairness and transparency, require?

    Model answer

Lawfulness, fairness and transparency requires an organisation to have a lawful basis for what it does with personal data, to use it in ways people would reasonably expect, and to be open about what it is doing.

  3. 3

    Explain the purpose limitation principle.

    Model answer

Purpose limitation requires personal data to be collected for specified, explicit and legitimate purposes, and forbids using it later for a purpose incompatible with the one it was collected for.

  4. 4

    Explain the data minimisation principle.

    Model answer

Data minimisation requires an organisation to collect only the personal data that is adequate and relevant for its stated purpose. Anything beyond that must not be collected at all.

  5. 5

    Explain the accuracy principle.

    Model answer

Accuracy requires personal data to be correct and, where necessary, kept up to date. Inaccurate data must be corrected or erased without delay once the error comes to light.

  6. 6

    Explain the storage limitation principle.

    Model answer

Storage limitation requires personal data to be kept in a form that identifies people no longer than is necessary, so an organisation must set retention periods and delete records when they expire.
