Direct and parallel changeover
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Direct changeover and parallel running.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is meant by changeover?
Give two advantages of direct changeover.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by changeover?
Model answer
Changeover is the switch from the old way of working to the new system, and the method chosen decides how much of the organisation moves across and how quickly.
- 2
Describe direct changeover.
Model answer
In direct changeover the old system is stopped and the new one takes over immediately, usually overnight or over a weekend, with no period of overlap.
- 3
Give two advantages of direct changeover.
Model answer
Direct changeover is the cheapest and quickest method because only one system is ever running, and staff are in no doubt about which system they should be using.
- 4
Give two disadvantages of direct changeover.
Model answer
A serious fault in the new system leaves the organisation with nothing to fall back on, and staff must be fully trained before the switch because there is no gentle introduction.
- 5
When is direct changeover a reasonable choice?
Model answer
Direct changeover suits a small or non-critical system, or one that has been very thoroughly tested, where a short interruption could be tolerated if anything went wrong.
- 6
Describe parallel running.
Model answer
In parallel running the old and the new systems are both operated on the same work for a period, and their results are compared until the new system is trusted.
