Main memory: RAM, ROM and addressing
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Typically stored in ROM, memory address and word length of a processor.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does it mean to say that RAM is volatile?
Why can a location in RAM be reached in any order?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is main memory used for?
Model answer
Main memory holds the programs and data the processor is working on at that moment, so instructions and values can be fetched quickly.
- 2
What does it mean to say that RAM is volatile?
Model answer
RAM is volatile because its contents are lost the instant the power is removed.
- 3
Why can a location in RAM be reached in any order?
Model answer
Every location in RAM has its own address, so the processor can read or write any one of them directly without passing over the others first.
- 4
How does ROM differ from RAM in what can be done with it?
Model answer
ROM can be read but is not written to in normal use, and ROM keeps its contents when the power is switched off.
- 5
What is typically stored in ROM?
Model answer
ROM usually holds the start-up program that tests the hardware and loads the operating system from secondary storage.
- 6
Explain why a computer cannot keep everything it owns in main memory.
Model answer
Main memory is volatile and costs far more per gigabyte than secondary storage, so only the work currently in hand is held there.

Every question in Computer Architecture and Processing Systems, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
