Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is the Turing test?

    Model answer

The Turing test is a practical test in which a judge holds typed conversations with a hidden person and a hidden machine. The machine passes if the judge cannot reliably tell which is which.

  2. 2

Who proposed the Turing test, and in what year?

    Model answer

Alan Turing proposed the test in a paper published in 1950, where he set it out as an imitation game.

  3. 3

Explain the significance of the Turing test in defining artificial intelligence.

    Model answer

The Turing test replaced the unanswerable question of whether a machine can think with an observable behavioural test, so intelligence is judged by whether a machine's responses are indistinguishable from a person's rather than by what happens inside it.

  4. 4

Why is the Turing test conducted through typed text alone?

    Model answer

Text-only conversation stops the judge being influenced by a machine's voice or appearance, so the machine is judged only on the content of what it says.

  5. 5

State the role of the human participant in the Turing test.

    Model answer

The human participant converses with the judge alongside the machine. The judge therefore has a genuine human standard to compare against instead of deciding in isolation.

  6. 6

Give one criticism of the Turing test as a measure of intelligence.

    Model answer

A machine can pass the Turing test by imitating conversation convincingly without understanding a word of it, so the test measures the appearance of intelligence rather than intelligence itself.
