Flowcharts and algorithm representation

  • 3 things to know
  • AS Unit 1

Overview

The standard flowchart symbols for start and stop, process, decision and input or output, how sequence, selection and iteration appear in each, and when a flowchart is clearer than pseudocode.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a flowchart?

    Model answer

A flowchart is a diagram that represents an algorithm as a set of standard symbols joined by arrows showing the order in which the steps are carried out.

  2. 2

Which flowchart symbol marks the beginning and the end of an algorithm?

    Model answer

The beginning and the end are shown by the terminator symbol, which takes the shape of a rounded rectangle.

  3. 3

What does a rectangle represent in a flowchart?

    Model answer

A rectangle is the process symbol, used for a step such as a calculation or the storing of a value in a variable.

  4. 4

What does a parallelogram represent in a flowchart?

    Model answer

A parallelogram is the input or output symbol, used wherever data is read in or a result is displayed or printed.

  5. 5

What does a diamond represent in a flowchart?

    Model answer

A diamond is the decision symbol, holding a condition and having a separate labelled exit for each possible answer, normally yes and no.

  6. 6

What is the purpose of the arrows in a flowchart?

    Model answer

The arrows are flow lines, and they show the order in which the symbols are carried out and which route is taken out of a decision.
