Full, differential and incremental backups
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Full backup, incremental backup and differential backup.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a differential backup?
Why do differential backups grow larger through the week?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a full backup?
Model answer
A full backup copies all of the selected data every time it runs, regardless of what has changed since the last one.
- 2
Give one advantage and one disadvantage of a full backup.
Model answer
A full backup restores from a single copy and is therefore the simplest and fastest to recover from, but it takes the longest to run and uses the most storage.
- 3
What is an incremental backup?
Model answer
An incremental backup copies only the data changed since the previous backup of any kind, whether that was a full backup or another incremental one.
- 4
What is a differential backup?
Model answer
A differential backup copies all the data changed since the last full backup, however many differential backups have been taken in between.
- 5
Which type of backup is the quickest to take, and why?
Model answer
An incremental backup is the quickest to take, because it copies only the changes made since the last backup of any kind, and that is the smallest volume of the three.
- 6
Which type of backup is the quickest to restore from, and why?
Model answer
A full backup is the quickest to restore from, because everything needed is held in one copy and no further sets have to be applied after it.
