The need for secondary storage
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Secondary storage, sequential access and direct access to stored data and access time of a storage device.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give the main reason a computer cannot manage on main memory alone.
Why is secondary storage needed for capacity as well as for permanence?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is secondary storage?
Model answer
Secondary storage is non-volatile storage that holds programs and data permanently, separately from the main memory in which the processor works.
- 2
Give the main reason a computer cannot manage on main memory alone.
Model answer
Main memory is volatile, so everything a user had produced would be lost the moment the machine was switched off.
- 3
Why is secondary storage needed for capacity as well as for permanence?
Model answer
Secondary storage costs far less per gigabyte than RAM, so a machine can hold far more than could ever be afforded in main memory.
- 4
Why can the processor not run a program directly from secondary storage?
Model answer
The processor can only fetch instructions from addressable main memory, so a program must first be copied from storage into memory before it will run.
- 5
How does secondary storage support backing up?
Model answer
A second copy of important files can be written to a separate storage device and kept safe, so the data survives a failure of the original.
- 6
Explain the role of secondary storage in archiving.
Model answer
Data no longer needed day to day is moved onto secondary storage for long-term keeping. Moving it frees room on the working system while the records themselves are retained.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Computer Architecture and Processing Systems, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
