The Development Project: Build, Testing and Evaluation
Evaluating the solution against the user requirements
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 2
Overview
Taking each requirement in turn with the evidence for it, reporting shortfalls honestly, gathering the client's own assessment against real tasks, and reviewing the process as well as the product.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How should the evaluation be structured?
How does the test log support the evaluation?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is evaluation in a development project?
Model answer
Evaluation is a reasoned judgement of how well the finished system meets the requirements agreed at the start, supported by the evidence of testing and of use, together with an assessment of its limitations.
- 2
Why must the evaluation be against the original requirements?
Model answer
The requirements are what was agreed, so they are the only fair standard. Judging a system against what it turned out to do makes the evaluation meaningless, because it could never fail.
- 3
How should the evaluation be structured?
Model answer
The evaluation takes each requirement in turn, states whether it was met fully, partly or not at all, gives the evidence, and explains any shortfall. The essential requirements are covered first.
- 4
What counts as evidence that a requirement was met?
Model answer
Evidence is the test in the log that demonstrates it, a screenshot of the working feature, or a report produced by the system, rather than a statement that it works.
- 5
How should a requirement that was only partly met be reported?
Model answer
It is stated as partly met, with what was delivered, what was not, why, and what it would take to complete it. Concealing a shortfall is discovered by the user in the first week and costs the developer's credibility.
- 6
Why is the client's own opinion part of the evaluation?
Model answer
The client is the only judge of whether the system helps them do their work, and they will notice problems of fit and convenience that no test discovers. Their view is gathered systematically rather than as a general impression.
