The need for data compression, lossless and lossy
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Data compression, compression ratio and lossless compression.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give three reasons for compressing data.
Why does compression matter so much for streaming video?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is data compression?
Model answer
Data compression is the re-encoding of a file so that it occupies fewer bytes than the original does.
- 2
Give three reasons for compressing data.
Model answer
Compression saves storage space, shortens transfer times and reduces the bandwidth each transfer consumes.
- 3
Why does compression matter so much for streaming video?
Model answer
Uncompressed video needs far more data per second than a household connection can carry, so without compression the picture could never arrive in time to be played.
- 4
What is a compression ratio?
Model answer
A compression ratio compares the original size with the compressed size, so a file falling from 4 MB to 1 MB has a ratio of 4:1.
- 5
A 20 MB file is compressed to 5 MB. What percentage of the original size has been saved?
Model answer
A saving of 15 MB has been made from the original 20 MB, and that is 75% of the original size.
- 6
What is lossless compression?
Model answer
Lossless compression removes only redundancy, so decompressing the file rebuilds the original exactly, bit for bit.
