Systems Analysis and Development Approaches
The purpose of analysis
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Purpose of the analysis stage of systems development, three parts that make up any computer system and role of the user interface within a computer system.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the purpose of the analysis stage of systems development?
Name the three parts that make up any computer system.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the purpose of the analysis stage of systems development?
Model answer
Analysis establishes exactly what the new system must do, by investigating the current system, identifying its problems and recording the users' requirements.
- 2
Name the three parts that make up any computer system.
Model answer
A computer system consists of a user interface, the processes that act on data, and the data itself.
- 3
What is the role of the user interface within a computer system?
Model answer
The user interface is the part of a system through which people enter data and receive results, and it controls what the user is able to do at each point.
- 4
What is meant by a process in a computer system?
Model answer
A process is an operation the system carries out on data, such as checking an entry, calculating a total or updating a stored record.
- 5
Why is the data of a system considered separately from its processes?
Model answer
Data outlives any one program and is usually shared by several processes, so keeping it separate allows processes to be changed or added without the stored data having to be rebuilt.
- 6
Why does an analyst study the current system even when it is to be scrapped?
Model answer
The current system shows the data the organisation holds, the rules it follows and the problems its users face, and most of that has to be carried into the new system whatever technology replaces it.
