Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a web browser?
Model answer
A web browser is the application that requests web pages from servers, interprets the code they contain and displays the result to the user.
- 2
Describe how a browser turns received code into the page a user sees.
Model answer
The browser reads the markup to build a model of the document's structure, applies the style rules to work out size, colour and position, requests the images and other files the page refers to, and then draws the finished layout on screen.
- 3
Why might the same page look slightly different in two browsers?
Model answer
Each browser has its own rendering engine and its own built-in default styling, so where a page relies on behaviour the standards leave open, or uses a feature one browser has not implemented, the results differ.
- 4
What is a browser cache?
Model answer
A browser cache is a store of copies of pages, images and stylesheets that have already been downloaded, kept on the user's own device.
- 5
Give two benefits of caching web content.
Model answer
Caching makes a revisited page appear much faster because the files are read from local storage rather than the network, and it reduces the amount of data transferred, which saves bandwidth for the user and the server.
- 6
Give one problem caused by caching.
Model answer
A cached copy can become out of date, so a visitor may be shown yesterday's prices or an old announcement even though the site has been updated.
