Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is the purpose of a data flow diagram?

    Model answer

A data flow diagram, abbreviated to DFD, shows how data moves through a system: where it comes from, the processes that change it, where it is stored and where it goes. A DFD deliberately says nothing about the order in which things happen.

  2. 2

Name the four symbols used in a data flow diagram.

    Model answer

A data flow diagram uses symbols for an external entity, a process, a data store and a data flow.

  3. 3

What does an external entity represent on a data flow diagram?

    Model answer

An external entity represents a person, an organisation or another system outside the boundary that supplies data to the system or receives data from it.

  4. 4

What does a process represent on a data flow diagram?

    Model answer

A process represents an activity that turns incoming data into different outgoing data, such as checking an order or calculating a bill.

  5. 5

What does a data store represent on a data flow diagram?

    Model answer

A data store represents data held by the system for later use, such as a file or a database table.

  6. 6

What information is written on a data flow arrow?

    Model answer

A data flow arrow shows the direction the data travels and carries the name of the data being passed, such as ‘customer order’.
