Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is an implementation strategy?

    Model answer

An implementation strategy is the documented plan for getting the system into live use: how it is installed, how existing data is transferred, how the switch from the old way of working is made, how users are trained, and what happens if something goes wrong.

  2. 2

Why must the strategy be documented rather than agreed verbally?

    Model answer

Going live involves the client's staff and their working data, and a documented plan lets them see what is expected of them and when, and lets everyone check afterwards that each step was completed.

  3. 3

What should the installation section of the strategy cover?

    Model answer

The installation section covers what is installed where, in what order, who does it, what has to be in place first, how long the machines are unavailable, and when it happens.

  4. 4

Why is timing part of the strategy?

    Model answer

Going live disrupts work, so the moment is chosen for the client's business — outside the busy period, at the end of an accounting month, or during a closure — rather than for the developer's convenience.

  5. 5

What is data transfer, and why is it planned in advance?

    Model answer

Data transfer is moving the client's existing records into the new system. It is planned because the old data will not match the new structure exactly, and deciding how to map it while the system is live is far too late.

  6. 6

    How is transferred data checked?

    Model answer

The count of records transferred is compared with the count in the source, key totals such as balances are compared, and a sample of individual records is checked field by field against the original.
