  1. 1

What is an integrated development environment?

    Model answer

An integrated development environment, or IDE, is a single application that brings together all the tools needed to write, translate, run and correct a program.

  2. 2

Name four tools you would expect to find in a typical IDE.

    Model answer

A typical IDE provides a source code editor, a translator such as a compiler or an interpreter, a debugger and a facility to run the program.

  3. 3

What does syntax highlighting do, and how does it help the programmer?

    Model answer

Syntax highlighting colours keywords, strings, numbers and comments differently, which makes the structure of the code easy to read and shows up a mistyped keyword or an unclosed string at a glance.

  4. 4

What is the purpose of auto-completion in a code editor?

    Model answer

Auto-completion offers the rest of a keyword, variable name or method as the programmer begins to type it, which speeds up entry and prevents an identifier from being spelt two different ways.

  5. 5

    What is a breakpoint?

    Model answer

A breakpoint is a marker placed on a line of code that makes the running program pause when it reaches that line, so the programmer can examine what has happened up to that point.

  6. 6

Describe what is meant by stepping through code.

    Model answer

Stepping through code means executing a program one statement at a time under the control of the debugger, so the programmer can see exactly which route through the code is taken.
