Shells, heuristics, fuzzy logic and the knowledge engineer
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Expert system shell, heuristic used in fault diagnosis and main risk of reasoning with heuristics.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is an expert system shell?
Give two advantages of building an expert system from a shell.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an expert system shell?
Model answer
An expert system shell is a ready-made expert system with an empty knowledge base, supplying the inference engine, the user interface and the explanation facility so that a developer only has to add the rules and facts.
- 2
Give two advantages of building an expert system from a shell.
Model answer
A shell removes the need to write and test the reasoning software. An expert system is therefore produced far more quickly and at lower cost than one built from nothing.
- 3
State one disadvantage of using an expert system shell.
Model answer
A shell fixes the way knowledge must be expressed and how the reasoning proceeds, so a problem that does not fit the shell's rule format cannot be represented properly.
- 4
What are heuristics?
Model answer
Heuristics are rules of thumb drawn from experience that usually lead to a good answer quickly, with no guarantee that the answer reached is the best one available.
- 5
Why does an expert system rely on heuristics?
Model answer
Examining every possibility in a large problem would take an unacceptable time, so heuristics let an expert system discard unlikely lines of enquiry and reach a workable conclusion quickly.
- 6
Give an example of a heuristic used in fault diagnosis.
Model answer
A heuristic in a vehicle diagnosis system is to test the cheapest and commonest cause first, so a flat battery is checked before the engine management wiring.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Artificial Intelligence, Expert Systems and Robotics, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
