Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why is a mobile telephone network divided into cells?

    Model answer

A mobile network is divided into cells so the same frequencies can be reused in cells far enough apart not to interfere. One limited band of spectrum can therefore serve millions of subscribers at once.

  2. 2

What is a cell in a mobile phone network?

    Model answer

A cell is the area of ground covered by one base station. Any handset inside the cell can hold a usable radio link to that station.

  3. 3

What equipment does a mobile phone mast carry?

    Model answer

A mobile phone mast carries the antennas of a base station mounted high for a clear signal path, together with the transceivers, the power supply and the fixed link back to the rest of the network.

  4. 4

What is a base transceiver station?

    Model answer

A base transceiver station is the radio equipment at a mast serving the handsets in one cell. The station converts between the radio signal and the digital traffic the network carries.

  5. 5

Why are cells drawn as hexagons on a network plan?

    Model answer

Cells are drawn as hexagons because a hexagonal grid covers an area with no gaps or overlaps. The shape also approximates the roughly circular coverage of an antenna, although real coverage follows the terrain.

  6. 6

Explain what is meant by frequency reuse.

    Model answer

Frequency reuse allocates channels in a repeating pattern so that neighbouring cells always use different frequencies. A frequency is used again only in a cell far enough away for the signal to have weakened.
