Utility programs
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Utility program, full backup and an incremental backup and difference between backing up and archiving.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why are utility programs needed alongside an operating system?
Distinguish between a full backup and an incremental backup.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a utility program?
Model answer
A utility program is a small piece of system software that performs one specific housekeeping or maintenance task on the computer.
- 2
Why are utility programs needed alongside an operating system?
Model answer
An operating system runs the machine but does not carry out every maintenance job, so utilities fill the gaps in protecting, tidying and repairing the system.
- 3
What does a file backup utility do?
Model answer
A file backup utility copies selected files to another device or service to a schedule, so they can be restored after loss, damage or accidental deletion.
- 4
Distinguish between a full backup and an incremental backup.
Model answer
A full backup copies everything selected on every occasion, while an incremental backup copies only what has changed since the previous backup of any kind.
- 5
What does a backup utility do that copying files by hand does not?
Model answer
A backup utility can be scheduled to run without anyone remembering, can copy files that are open or in use, can track which files have changed so only those are copied, and can compress and verify the copy. Copying by hand does none of these and is skipped as soon as people are busy.
- 6
Why is an incremental backup quicker to make but slower to restore?
Model answer
An incremental backup writes only the latest changes, but a restore has to apply the full backup and then every increment since, in the right order.
