IP addresses and MAC addresses
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Purpose of an IP address, purpose of a MAC address and length of a MAC address and how it is written.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define the purpose of an IP address.
State the length of a MAC address and how it is written.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the purpose of an IP address.
Model answer
An IP address identifies a device on a network so that packets can be routed to it, and the address shows which network the device belongs to as well as which host it is.
- 2
Define the purpose of a MAC address.
Model answer
A MAC address uniquely identifies a network interface at the hardware level, so that a frame can be delivered to the correct device within a single local network.
- 3
How many bits are there in an IPv4 address, and how is it usually written?
Model answer
An IPv4 address is 32 bits long and is normally written as four denary numbers from 0 to 255 separated by full stops.
- 4
Why was IPv6 introduced?
Model answer
IPv6 was introduced because the 32 bits of an IPv4 address allow only about four billion addresses. That supply is far too small for the number of devices now connected.
- 5
State the length of a MAC address and how it is written.
Model answer
A MAC address is 48 bits long and is written as twelve hexadecimal digits, usually shown in six pairs separated by colons or hyphens.
- 6
What information is carried in the first half of a MAC address?
Model answer
The first 24 bits of a MAC address identify the manufacturer of the network interface, and the remaining bits are the serial number that manufacturer assigned to the card.
