Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a web server?
Model answer
A web server is a computer running software that waits for requests for web pages and returns the requested files to the browsers that ask for them.
- 2
Describe what a web server does when a request arrives.
Model answer
A web server checks the address requested against the files it holds, runs any script the page needs, and sends back a response containing a status code and either the content or an explanation of why the content could not be supplied.
- 3
Why must a web server have a permanent connection and a stable address?
Model answer
A web server has to answer requests from anywhere in the world at any hour, so the machine must stay connected continuously and keep an address the naming system can point visitors at.
- 4
What is meant by web hosting?
Model answer
Web hosting is the service of storing the files of a website on a server that is permanently connected to the internet, so that the site is available to visitors at all times.
- 5
Distinguish between shared hosting and dedicated hosting.
Model answer
Shared hosting places many customers' sites on one server whose resources they divide between them, while dedicated hosting gives a single customer the whole machine, at greater cost but with more capacity and control.
- 6
Name three factors an organisation should compare when choosing a hosting service.
Model answer
An organisation should compare the storage space and monthly data transfer allowed, the guaranteed availability of the service, and whether the technologies the site needs, such as server-side scripting and a database, are supported.
