Networks
Peer-to-peer and server-based networks
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Peer-to-peer network, server-based network and main risk of relying on a single server.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does a school with several hundred users choose a server-based network?
Describe a server-based network.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe a peer-to-peer network.
Model answer
A peer-to-peer network is one in which every computer has equal status and each machine can both offer its own files and printers to others and use resources offered by them.
- 2
Describe a server-based network.
Model answer
A server-based network is one in which one or more dedicated machines provide services to client computers, holding the shared files, printers and user accounts centrally.
- 3
Where are user accounts held in each of the two network types?
Model answer
A peer-to-peer network keeps a separate set of accounts on every machine, while a server-based network keeps all accounts in one central directory on the server.
- 4
Explain why backing up data is easier on a server-based network.
Model answer
All the important files on a server-based network sit on the server, so one scheduled backup captures everything, whereas a peer-to-peer network scatters files across every machine and each would have to be backed up separately.
- 5
Give one advantage of a peer-to-peer network over a server-based network.
Model answer
A peer-to-peer network is cheaper to set up, because no dedicated server machine, server operating system or specialist administrator is required.
- 6
Give one security weakness of a peer-to-peer network.
Model answer
A peer-to-peer network has no central control of permissions, so each user decides what to share and a single careless setting can expose files to everyone on the network.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Networks, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
