Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is TCP/IP?

    Model answer

TCP/IP is the suite of protocols on which the internet runs, taking its name from its two central members, the Transmission Control Protocol and the Internet Protocol.

  2. 2

State the role of the Internet Protocol within TCP/IP.

    Model answer

The Internet Protocol addresses each packet with a source and destination and allows routers to forward the packet across joined networks towards its destination, without guaranteeing that the packet arrives.

  3. 3

State the role of the Transmission Control Protocol within TCP/IP.

    Model answer

The Transmission Control Protocol splits a message into numbered segments, checks that each one arrives, asks for any missing segment again and reassembles the message in the correct order at the receiver.

  4. 4

Describe the three-way handshake that opens a TCP connection.

    Model answer

The client sends a synchronise request, the server replies acknowledging that request and sending a synchronise of its own, and the client acknowledges the server's request, after which both ends agree the connection is open.

  5. 5

How does TCP recover from a lost segment?

    Model answer

The Transmission Control Protocol expects an acknowledgement for each segment within a time limit, and if none arrives before the timer expires then that segment is sent again.

  6. 6

How do the four layers of the TCP/IP model relate to the seven OSI layers?

    Model answer

The TCP/IP model uses a network access layer covering the OSI physical and data link layers, an internet layer matching the network layer, a transport layer matching the transport layer, and a single application layer covering the OSI session, presentation and application layers.
