Transmission media: metal cable, fibre optic and wireless
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Construction of a coaxial cable, how a fibre optic cable carries data and why fibre optic cable is immune to electromagnetic interference.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give two performance advantages of fibre optic cable over copper.
Give two disadvantages of installing fibre optic cable.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does a metal cable carry, and what is the cable normally made of?
Model answer
A metal cable carries data as changing electrical voltages along conductors that are normally made of copper.
- 2
Why are the conductors in a twisted pair cable twisted around one another?
Model answer
Twisting the two conductors makes each of them pick up any interference almost equally, so the unwanted signal cancels out when the receiver compares the pair, and it also reduces the crosstalk between neighbouring pairs.
- 3
What does the shielding in a shielded twisted pair cable add?
Model answer
Shielded twisted pair adds a conductive foil or braid around the pairs that intercepts external electrical noise and carries it to earth, letting the cable work in electrically noisy places such as a factory floor.
- 4
Describe the construction of a coaxial cable.
Model answer
A coaxial cable has a single central conductor surrounded by an insulating layer, a braided metal screen and an outer protective sheath, with the screen and the core sharing the same axis.
- 5
What is attenuation, and why does it limit the length of a copper cable run?
Model answer
Attenuation is the weakening of a signal as it travels along the medium, and beyond a certain length the copper signal becomes too weak for the receiver to distinguish from noise, so a repeater or switch must be inserted.
- 6
Why is a copper cable a poor choice for a run passing close to heavy electrical machinery?
Model answer
Copper carries data as an electrical signal and the motors produce strong electromagnetic fields, which induce unwanted currents in the cable and corrupt the data.
