Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a domain name?
Model answer
A domain name is the memorable text name registered to identify a website or an organisation on the internet, standing in place of the numeric address a computer actually uses.
- 2
Explain how domain names are organised.
Model answer
Domain names form a hierarchy read from right to left, beginning with the top-level domain, then the name registered by the organisation, and then any further names the organisation chooses to place in front to identify individual servers or sections.
- 3
What is a top-level domain?
Model answer
A top-level domain is the final part of a domain name, such as the generic endings for commercial or non-profit bodies, and it places the name within one of the broad categories of the naming hierarchy.
- 4
Distinguish between a generic top-level domain and a country code top-level domain.
Model answer
A generic top-level domain such as the commercial or organisation ending describes the type of body registering the name, while a country code top-level domain is a two-letter code identifying the nation the registration belongs to.
- 5
Explain the structure of a domain name of the form example.co.uk.
Model answer
In example.co.uk the country code identifies the United Kingdom, the middle label narrows the registration to commercial bodies within that country, and the leftmost label is the name registered by the organisation itself.
- 6
What is a subdomain?
Model answer
A subdomain is an extra label placed in front of a registered domain name to divide a site into separately addressed parts, so that an organisation can run distinct services under names it already owns.
