Multimedia assets in a web page
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Multimedia content on a web page, streaming a video and downloading it and two ways of making audio and video content accessible.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why do many organisations serve video from a dedicated media service rather than their own web server?
How does consistent use of multimedia contribute to the design of a site?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by multimedia content on a web page?
Model answer
Multimedia content is material other than plain text, such as images, sound, animation and video, combined with the text to inform or engage the visitor.
- 2
How is an image included in a web page?
Model answer
An image is not stored inside the page file but is referenced by address in the markup, and the browser makes a separate request to fetch the picture after the page itself has arrived.
- 3
Why must a media file be uploaded to the web server rather than left on the developer's own computer?
Model answer
A visitor's browser fetches each referenced file from the server, so a reference pointing to a folder on the developer's machine cannot be reached from outside and the visitor sees a broken image.
- 4
Explain the effect of large media files on the experience of visiting a page.
Model answer
Large media files take longer to transfer, so the page stays incomplete while they arrive, and visitors on slow or metered connections may give up before the content appears.
- 5
Why should a photograph be resized before it is uploaded rather than shrunk by the page?
Model answer
Setting a small display size still makes the browser download the full-size file, so the visitor pays for every unnecessary pixel in transfer time, whereas resizing beforehand reduces the file actually sent.
- 6
What is a thumbnail, and why is one used on a gallery page?
Model answer
A thumbnail is a small, low-cost version of an image that links to the full-size picture, and a gallery uses thumbnails so the page loads quickly and only the images a visitor actually chooses are downloaded in full.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
