The ethics of artificial intelligence and of personal information
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Ethical question for an employer whose work is being automated, ethical difficulty with machines that make life-and-death decisions and ethical test at the point where personal information is captured.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does transparency require of an organisation using an intelligent system?
Why does a lawful privacy notice not necessarily achieve transparency?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why does the use of artificial intelligence raise ethical questions that conventional software does not?
Model answer
An intelligent system derives its own rules from data and is applied to decisions about people at very large scale. The errors and prejudices in that data are inherited by the system rather than chosen by anybody. Every case then receives the same flawed treatment.
- 2
Who should be answerable when an intelligent system causes harm?
Model answer
Responsibility is shared between the organisation that deployed the system, the developer that built it and the supplier of the training data. Most ethical codes place the answer with the organisation that put the system before the public.
- 3
What does transparency require of an organisation using an intelligent system?
Model answer
Transparency requires that a person affected can be told, in terms they can follow, what information was used and what led to the outcome, and a system too opaque to explain should not be used where the outcome matters to someone.
- 4
What is the ethical question for an employer whose work is being automated?
Model answer
Automation now reaches routine clerical and analytical work as well as manual work, so the ethical question for an employer is whether it plans redeployment and retraining for the people affected or simply takes the saving.
- 5
What is the ethical difficulty with machines that make life-and-death decisions?
Model answer
A machine given a decision that can cost a life raises the question of whether any system should make that choice. An autonomous vehicle or an autonomous weapon also raises the question of who is accountable when the choice is wrong.
- 6
Should a person always be told when they are dealing with a machine rather than a person?
Model answer
A person dealing with an automated system should be told so plainly. Trust and the willingness to disclose information depend on knowing what one is dealing with.
