Bandwidth and broadband
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Term bandwidth, units in which bandwidth is normally expressed and term broadband.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does streaming high-definition video demand far more bandwidth than reading text pages?
Explain why the throughput measured on a link is always lower than its stated bandwidth.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the term bandwidth.
Model answer
Bandwidth is the amount of data a communication link can carry in a given time, normally quoted in bits per second.
- 2
State the units in which bandwidth is normally expressed.
Model answer
Bandwidth is expressed in bits per second and in its multiples, namely kilobits per second, megabits per second and gigabits per second.
- 3
Define the term broadband.
Model answer
Broadband is a permanently connected communication service offering high bandwidth, able to carry several channels of data over the same line at once.
- 4
How does broadband differ from a dial-up connection?
Model answer
Broadband stays connected all the time and leaves the telephone line usable, and provides many times the data rate of a dial-up connection, which had to establish a call each time and occupied the line while in use.
- 5
Explain the difference between bandwidth and latency.
Model answer
Bandwidth measures how much data can be pushed through a link each second, while latency measures how long a single piece of data takes to travel from one end to the other, so a link can have high bandwidth and still respond slowly.
- 6
What is a contention ratio, and how does it affect the speed a household experiences?
Model answer
A contention ratio states how many subscribers share the same capacity from the provider, and a high ratio means the bandwidth available to each household falls sharply at busy times when many of them are online together.
