Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Name the three main types of test data.

    Model answer

The three main types of test data are normal data, extreme or boundary data, and erroneous data.

  2. 2

    What is normal test data?

    Model answer

Normal test data is typical valid data well inside the permitted range, used to confirm that the system gives the right result in ordinary use.

  3. 3

    What is extreme test data?

    Model answer

Extreme test data is valid data sitting exactly at the limits of the permitted range, used to confirm that those limits are accepted.

  4. 4

    What is boundary data?

    Model answer

Boundary data is a pair of values either side of a limit, one just inside and one just outside, used to confirm the system draws the line in exactly the right place.

  5. 5

    What is erroneous test data?

    Model answer

Erroneous test data is data the system ought to refuse, such as letters typed into a numeric field, and it is used to confirm the entry is rejected with a suitable message.

  6. 6

A field accepts ages from 11 to 18 inclusive. Give a normal value, the two extreme values and two erroneous values.

    Model answer

A normal value is 15, the extreme values are 11 and 18, and erroneous values include 10 and the word ‘twelve’.

ANormal data is 12, which should be accepted.
BBoundary data is 1 and 50, which should be accepted.
C0 and 51, just outside the limits, should be rejected.
