Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What must be specified when a query is designed?

    Model answer

A query specification states the question it answers, which tables and fields it uses, the criteria that select the rows, the sort order, any calculated fields, and who runs it and when.

  2. 2

Why is a query designed against a stated question?

    Model answer

Starting from the question the client actually asks keeps the query to what is needed and makes it testable, because the result can be checked against the answer the client expects.

  3. 3

    What is a parameter query?

    Model answer

A parameter query asks the user for a value when it runs and uses it as the criterion, so one design serves every case — one query returns the bookings for whichever date is entered rather than needing a query per date.

  4. 4

Why is a parameter query better than a query per case?

    Model answer

One query is maintained instead of many, the results are guaranteed consistent between cases, and a new value needs no development work at all.

  5. 5

What is a calculated field in a query?

    Model answer

A calculated field is one worked out from other fields when the query runs, such as a line total from quantity and unit price, so it is always correct and does not have to be stored and kept in step.

  6. 6

What should a report specification state?

    Model answer

A report specification states its title, who receives it and how often, the data it contains and where that data comes from, the grouping and sort order, the subtotals and totals, and its layout including headers and footers.
