Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a backup?
Model answer
A backup is a copy of data taken so that the data can be restored if the original is lost, damaged or corrupted.
- 2
Name four events a backup protects an organisation against.
Model answer
A backup protects against hardware failure, accidental deletion by a user, fire or theft destroying the equipment, and malicious damage such as a ransomware attack.
- 3
What is meant by recovery?
Model answer
Recovery is the process of restoring data and services from backup copies after a loss, so that the organisation can carry on working.
- 4
Why must a backup be stored away from the computers it protects?
Model answer
A fire, flood or theft that destroys the computers would destroy a backup kept beside them, so at least one copy is held off site or in a separate building.
- 5
What is the 3-2-1 approach to backup?
Model answer
The 3-2-1 approach keeps three copies of the data, on two different types of media, with one of those copies held off site.
- 6
Why must restoring from backup be tested regularly?
Model answer
A backup that has been silently failing or that cannot be read is worthless, and the only proof that it will work is to restore from it before it is actually needed.
