Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a user requirement?

    Model answer

A user requirement is a statement of something the system must do or must be, expressed in the user's own terms rather than in technical ones, and written so that the finished system can be checked against it.

  2. 2

Why are requirements detailed as inputs, processes and outputs?

    Model answer

Splitting requirements this way makes sure nothing is left implicit: every output must be traceable to the data that produces it, and every input must be needed by some process, which exposes both missing data and data collected for no reason.

  3. 3

Name four techniques for eliciting requirements from a client.

    Model answer

Requirements are elicited by interviewing the people who will use the system, issuing questionnaires where there are too many to interview, observing the current working practice, and examining the documents and files the organisation already uses.

  4. 4

What is the advantage of observation over interview?

    Model answer

Observation shows what people actually do rather than what they believe or say they do, which reveals informal workarounds and steps so habitual that nobody thinks to mention them.

  5. 5

What is the advantage of examining existing documents?

    Model answer

Existing forms, reports and files show the data the organisation genuinely holds and the format it expects, which is concrete evidence of requirements rather than opinion, and often reveals fields nobody remembered to describe.

  6. 6

What should a specified input state?

    Model answer

An input specification states what data is captured, where it comes from, who enters it, how often, in what format, and what validation applies to it.
