Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why does a development project identify possible extensions?

    Model answer

A delivered system is the starting point rather than the end, and the developer finishing it knows better than anyone what it could usefully do next, so recording those ideas preserves knowledge the client would otherwise lose.

  2. 2

Where do candidate extensions come from?

    Model answer

Extensions come from the non-essential requirements that were not built, from limitations found during evaluation, from things users asked for while working with the system, and from work the system makes possible that nobody thought of at the start.

  3. 3

How should an extension be described?

    Model answer

An extension is described by what it would do, which user need it serves, roughly what it would involve building, what it depends on in the existing system, and any risk it carries.

  4. 4

Why should extensions be prioritised rather than simply listed?

    Model answer

A list of twenty ideas of equal weight is unusable. Ranking them by benefit against effort tells the client what to do first, which is what makes the list worth writing.

  5. 5

Give an example of a worthwhile extension to a library system, and justify it.

    Model answer

Emailing an automatic reminder before a loan falls due would reduce overdue items and the staff time spent chasing them, and it needs only an email address on the member record and a scheduled query the system can already express.

  6. 6

Give an example of an extension that would need substantial redesign.

    Model answer

Allowing members to reserve items online would need the system exposed to the internet, user accounts and authentication, and a reservation queue against each title, so it is a new subsystem rather than an addition to an existing one.
