Test data and the types of testing
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 2
Overview
White box testing, black box testing and unit testing.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give normal, boundary and erroneous test data for a field holding a quantity ordered between one and fifty.
What is white box testing?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is white box testing?
Model answer
White box testing tests with knowledge of the internal structure, choosing data that makes every path through the logic execute at least once, so a branch that is never exercised cannot hide a fault.
- 2
What is black box testing?
Model answer
Black box testing tests only against the specification, without regard to how the system is built. Data is chosen from what the system should accept and reject, and the internal code is irrelevant to the tester.
- 3
Why are both white box and black box testing needed?
Model answer
White box testing finds faults in paths the specification never mentions, and black box testing finds requirements the code does not implement at all. Neither finds the other's faults.
- 4
What is unit testing?
Model answer
Unit testing tests one module or component on its own, with the modules it depends on replaced by stubs if necessary, so a fault found belongs to that unit.
- 5
What is integration testing?
Model answer
Integration testing tests modules working together, and finds faults in the interfaces between them: data passed in the wrong order or units, or a value one module produces that the next cannot handle.
- 6
What is system testing?
Model answer
System testing tests the whole assembled system against the requirements, in conditions as close as possible to the ones it will run in, including its volume of data and its number of users.
