Building the solution
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 2
Overview
Incremental development, version control and internal comments in code.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are internal comments in code, and what should they explain?
What should be done about a requirement that proves impossible during the build?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
In what order should the components of a database solution be built?
Model answer
The tables and relationships are built first, then the validation and the queries that depend on them, then the forms that put data in, and finally the reports that read it, because each stage depends on the one before.
- 2
Why is the data structure built before the interface?
Model answer
Forms and reports are bound to fields, so a change to the structure after they are built means rebuilding them. Getting the tables right first means the interface is built once.
- 3
What is meant by incremental development?
Model answer
Incremental development builds and tests one working piece at a time rather than assembling everything at the end, so faults are found while the recent work is small and the cause is easy to locate.
- 4
Why is a partly built system tested rather than left until it is finished?
Model answer
A fault found in one module is traced quickly because only that module is new. The same fault found after everything is assembled could be anywhere, and the search costs far more than the fix.
- 5
What is version control, and why does it matter during the build?
Model answer
Version control keeps previous states of the work so a change that turns out badly can be reversed. Without it, a day spent breaking something that used to work cannot be undone.
- 6
Why should the design be updated when the build departs from it?
Model answer
A design that no longer describes the system misleads whoever maintains it, so a departure is recorded with its reason at the time. Documentation reconstructed afterwards is guesswork.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Development Project: Build, Testing and Evaluation, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
