Client-side and server-side processing
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Client-side processing, server-side processing and task normally handled on the client side.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe what happens when a form is submitted for server-side processing.
How is a page personalised for an individual visitor using server-side processing?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is client-side processing?
Model answer
Client-side processing is work carried out by code that the browser downloads with the page and runs on the visitor's own computer.
- 2
What is server-side processing?
Model answer
Server-side processing is work carried out by code that runs on the machine hosting the website, before any output is sent to the visitor.
- 3
Give an example of a task normally handled on the client side.
Model answer
Checking that a form field is not empty and showing an immediate warning is normally handled on the client side, because the response has to be instant and needs nothing the browser does not already have.
- 4
Give an example of a task that must be handled on the server side.
Model answer
Looking up a customer's order history must be handled on the server side, because the data lives in a database that only the host machine may reach.
- 5
Where does the code run in each case, and who can read it?
Model answer
Client-side code is delivered to the browser and can be read by anyone who views the page source, whereas server-side code stays on the host and the visitor sees only the output it produces.
- 6
Give two advantages of client-side processing.
Model answer
Client-side processing responds instantly because no request has to travel to the server and back, and it removes work from the server, which can then handle more visitors.
