Alpha and beta testing
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Alpha testing, beta testing and closed beta and an open beta.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Distinguish between a closed beta and an open beta.
Give one advantage of a closed beta over an open beta.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is alpha testing?
Model answer
Alpha testing is testing of a nearly complete product carried out inside the developer's own organisation, under controlled conditions, before anyone outside sees it.
- 2
Who carries out alpha testing?
Model answer
Alpha testing is carried out by the developer's own staff, usually testers and employees who were not involved in writing the code.
- 3
What is beta testing?
Model answer
Beta testing releases a pre-release version to a limited group of real users outside the developer's organisation, who use it in their own conditions and report the problems they meet.
- 4
Give two reasons for beta testing a product after alpha testing.
Model answer
Beta testing exposes the software to a far wider range of hardware and settings than the developer owns, and to patterns of use the developer never thought to try.
- 5
Distinguish between a closed beta and an open beta.
Model answer
A closed beta is limited to an invited group of testers, while an open beta is available to anyone who chooses to try the pre-release version.
- 6
Give one advantage of a closed beta over an open beta.
Model answer
A closed beta keeps an unfinished product away from the general public and from competitors, and an invited group is more likely to report faults carefully.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Design, Development and Testing, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
