Virtualisation, hosted instances, hosted solutions and clustering
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Term virtualisation, node in a cluster and why virtualisation and clustering together make cloud computing possible.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a hypervisor?
Distinguish the host from a guest in a virtualised system.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the term virtualisation.
Model answer
Virtualisation is the technique of running several independent virtual computers on one physical machine, each with its own operating system and each behaving as though it had the hardware to itself.
- 2
What is a hypervisor?
Model answer
A hypervisor is the software layer that creates and manages virtual machines, sharing the physical processor, memory and storage between them and keeping each one isolated from the rest.
- 3
Distinguish the host from a guest in a virtualised system.
Model answer
The host is the physical machine together with its hypervisor, while a guest is a virtual machine running on that host with its own operating system and applications.
- 4
Give three benefits of virtualising servers.
Model answer
Virtualisation increases the use made of expensive hardware, reduces the number of physical machines to power and cool, and allows a new server to be created in minutes instead of ordered and installed.
- 5
Why is isolation between virtual machines important?
Model answer
Each virtual machine is isolated by the hypervisor, so a crash or a compromise of one guest does not directly affect the other guests sharing the same physical server.
- 6
How does virtualisation simplify backup and maintenance?
Model answer
A virtual machine can be captured whole as a snapshot and copied or moved to another physical host while it is running, so backups, test copies and hardware maintenance no longer require downtime.
