Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What should a detailed interface design show?

    Model answer

A detailed interface design shows the layout of every screen or form: each field with its label, its size and its data type, the buttons and navigation, the order in which the fields are entered, and the validation and messages that apply to each.

  2. 2

Why is a screen designed on paper before it is built?

    Model answer

A paper design can be shown to the user and changed in minutes, whereas a built screen takes hours to alter, so the layout is agreed while changing it is still nearly free.

  3. 3

What is meant by consistency in interface design?

    Model answer

Consistency means the same thing looks and behaves the same way everywhere: buttons in the same place, the same colours meaning the same thing, and the same key doing the same job on every screen, so what the user learns once continues to work.

  4. 4

How should the order of fields on a data entry form be decided?

    Model answer

The fields should follow the order of the source document the data is copied from, so the operator's eye moves down the paper and the screen together and nothing is skipped.

  5. 5

How does interface design reduce data entry errors?

    Model answer

An interface reduces errors by offering a list where the value is one of a known set, filling in defaults, formatting as the user types, showing an example of the expected format, and rejecting an impossible value as soon as it is entered.

  6. 6

Why should validation be specified for each field at design time?

    Model answer

Specifying it per field means every rule is decided deliberately and recorded, rather than added piecemeal during coding, and the finished system can be tested against a written list of rules.
