Query By Example and alternatives to SQL
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Query By Example, wizard in a database package and stored procedure.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is Query By Example usually specific to one product?
How do most database products relate Query By Example to SQL?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is Query By Example?
Model answer
Query By Example is a graphical way of building a query. The user is shown the tables and their fields and fills in a grid to choose the fields, set the criteria and set the sort order, and the software generates the query from it.
- 2
How does a user express a condition in Query By Example?
Model answer
The user types the condition into the criteria row beneath the field it applies to, so entering greater than the first of January 2026 under the join date restricts the result to members who joined after that.
- 3
How are two conditions combined in Query By Example?
Model answer
Conditions typed on the same criteria row must all be met, giving an AND; conditions typed on different rows are alternatives, giving an OR.
- 4
State two advantages of Query By Example over SQL.
Model answer
Query By Example needs no knowledge of syntax, so a non-specialist can build a query, and it shows the available tables and fields on screen, which removes mistyped names and reminds the user what data exists.
- 5
State two disadvantages of Query By Example compared with SQL.
Model answer
Query By Example cannot express everything SQL can, particularly nested queries and complex conditions, and a query built in a grid cannot easily be stored in a program, version controlled or reused inside application code.
- 6
Why is Query By Example usually specific to one product?
Model answer
The grid is part of a particular database management system's interface rather than a standard, so a query built in one product cannot be moved to another, whereas standard SQL is largely portable.
