Key term

Explain how Unicode remains compatible with ASCII.

Key term

What do the letters ASCII stand for?

Numbers

How many bits does the original ASCII code use, and how many characters does it define?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a character set?

    Model answer

A character set is an agreed table that gives every letter, digit, punctuation mark and control code a unique numeric code, so that text can be stored and exchanged as numbers.

  2. 2

What do the letters ASCII stand for?

    Model answer

ASCII stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange.

  3. 3

How many bits does the original ASCII code use, and how many characters does it define?

    Model answer

The original ASCII code uses 7 bits and defines 128 characters.

  4. 4

    What is extended ASCII?

    Model answer

Extended ASCII uses all 8 bits of a byte to give 256 codes, so the original 128 characters are joined by a further 128 for accented letters and extra symbols.

  5. 5

The ASCII code for capital A is 65. What is the code for capital E?

    Model answer

Capital E has the ASCII code 69, because the capital letters are coded in alphabetical order starting from 65.

  6. 6

The ASCII code for capital A is 65 and the code for small a is 97. How do the codes for a capital letter and its small letter relate?

    Model answer

The small letter is always 32 higher than the capital, so adding 32 to the code of any capital gives the code of the matching small letter.
