Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is Hypertext Markup Language?

    Model answer

Hypertext Markup Language is the language used to write web pages, describing the structure and meaning of the content by surrounding it with tags that the browser interprets.

  2. 2

Explain why HTML is described as a markup language rather than a programming language.

    Model answer

Hypertext Markup Language only labels parts of a document so a browser knows what each part is. A programming language additionally provides variables, calculations, decisions and loops, and the markup language has none of them.

  3. 3

Describe the structure of a typical HTML element.

    Model answer

A typical element begins with an opening tag naming the element in angle brackets, contains the content being marked up, and finishes with a closing tag that repeats the name after a forward slash.

  4. 4

What is an empty element in HTML?

    Model answer

An empty element is one that marks a single point in the document and encloses no content, so the element is written as a single tag with no closing partner.

  5. 5

What is an attribute, and where is it written?

    Model answer

An attribute is an extra piece of information given to an element, such as the file an image should show, and it is written inside the opening tag as a name followed by a value in quotation marks.

  6. 6

State two things that are placed in the head section of a page.

    Model answer

The head section holds the page title and the links to external stylesheets, together with other information about the document that is not displayed as content.
