Scheduling the project with a Gantt chart
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 2
Overview
Gantt chart, slack in a schedule and critical path.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is shown on each axis of a Gantt chart?
How is a dependency between two tasks shown on a Gantt chart?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a Gantt chart?
Model answer
A Gantt chart is a horizontal bar chart of a project's tasks against time. Each task is one bar whose left edge is its start date and whose length is its duration, so the whole schedule can be read at a glance.
- 2
What is shown on each axis of a Gantt chart?
Model answer
The vertical axis lists the tasks in the order they begin, and the horizontal axis is a timeline in days or weeks.
- 3
How is a dependency between two tasks shown on a Gantt chart?
Model answer
A dependency is drawn as an arrow from the end of the earlier task to the start of the later one, showing that the second cannot begin until the first has finished.
- 4
What is a milestone on a Gantt chart?
Model answer
A milestone is a point of zero duration marking the completion of a stage, drawn as a diamond rather than a bar. Signing off the requirements or delivering the tested system are typical milestones.
- 5
How does a Gantt chart show that two tasks run at the same time?
Model answer
Two bars that overlap horizontally occupy the same span of the timeline, which shows the tasks are worked on concurrently. Testing one module while coding the next is shown this way.
- 6
Why is a schedule broken into tasks before it is drawn?
Model answer
Breaking the work down forces every activity to be identified and given a duration, which exposes work that would otherwise be forgotten and makes the total estimate the sum of considered parts rather than a guess.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Development Project: Analysis and Design, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
