Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a test plan?

    Model answer

A test plan is a document setting out every test to be carried out on a system, the data each test uses and the result each one is expected to produce.

  2. 2

State two purposes of a test plan.

    Model answer

A test plan makes sure every requirement is tested rather than only the parts a tester happens to think of, and it provides a record that the testing was actually done.

  3. 3

Why is a test plan written before the tests are run?

    Model answer

Deciding the expected result in advance forces the tester to work from the requirement, so a wrong output cannot afterwards be accepted as though it had been intended.

  4. 4

Name six components of a typical test plan.

    Model answer

A test plan records a test number, a description of the test, the test data used, the type of that data, the expected result and the actual result.

  5. 5

What further columns are often added beyond the expected and actual results?

    Model answer

A test plan often adds the action taken when a test fails, the date of the test, the name of the tester, and a reference to the requirement being proved.

  6. 6

Why does each test carry a unique number?

    Model answer

A unique number lets a fault report, a correction and a re-test all refer to the same test without ambiguity, and lets other documents cross-refer to it.
