What data mining is
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 1
Overview
Term data mining, stages of the knowledge discovery process around data mining and market basket analysis.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is the process called mining?
Distinguish data mining from running a database query.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the term data mining.
Model answer
Data mining is the process of examining very large stores of data in order to discover patterns, associations and trends that were not known in advance and that the organisation can act on.
- 2
Why is the process called mining?
Model answer
The term data mining reflects the extraction of something valuable from a very large bulk of ordinary material, since the useful patterns are a tiny fraction of the records searched.
- 3
Distinguish data mining from running a database query.
Model answer
A database query returns the records that match conditions the user already had in mind, while data mining searches for relationships that nobody thought to ask about.
- 4
Outline the stages of the knowledge discovery process around data mining.
Model answer
Knowledge discovery selects the relevant data, cleans it, transforms it into a suitable form, mines it for patterns, then interprets and evaluates what was found before anything is acted on.
- 5
What makes a discovered pattern worth having?
Model answer
A discovered pattern is worth having only if it holds on new data, was not already known and can change a decision, because an obvious pattern or one that cannot be acted on has no value.
- 6
Why must a pattern found by data mining not be treated as a cause?
Model answer
Data mining finds associations rather than causes, so two things occurring together gives no evidence that one produces the other and further investigation is needed before acting as though it did.
