Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

State the purpose of a network interface card.

    Model answer

A network interface card gives a computer its physical connection to the network, converting data from the computer into signals suitable for the transmission medium and back again.

  2. 2

Which address is held permanently on a network interface card?

    Model answer

A network interface card holds the media access control (MAC) address. The manufacturer writes that address into the card when the card is made.

  3. 3

Describe what a switched hub does with an incoming frame.

    Model answer

A switched hub reads the destination hardware address in the frame and sends the frame out of only the port that leads to that device, instead of copying the frame to every port.

  4. 4

How does a switched hub learn which device is on which port?

    Model answer

A switched hub records the source hardware address of every frame it receives against the port the frame arrived on, so a table of addresses and ports builds up as devices send traffic.

  5. 5

Explain why replacing a simple broadcasting hub with a switched hub reduces collisions.

    Model answer

A switched hub gives each port its own separate segment and forwards a frame only where it is needed, so two conversations between different pairs of machines no longer share the same medium and cannot interfere.

  6. 6

    What does a repeater do?

    Model answer

A repeater receives a weakened signal, regenerates it to full strength and clean shape, and sends it on, allowing a cable run to exceed the length the medium would otherwise allow.
