Biological factors affecting intelligence
- 3 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on heritability, twin and adoption studies of intelligence, prenatal factors, brain size, the neural efficiency hypothesis, myelination, interpreting heritability estimates, and why biological research on intelligence is socially sensitive.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name two factors acting before birth that can lower a child's later intelligence.
A study reports a heritability of 0.7 for IQ in one country. Explain why this does not mean improving schooling is pointless.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is heritability, and what does it not tell you?
Model answer
Heritability is the proportion of the variation in a trait within a population that can be attributed to genetic differences; it does not tell you how much of any one individual's intelligence was caused by their genes.
- 2
Why do researchers compare monozygotic and dizygotic twins when studying intelligence?
Model answer
Monozygotic twins share virtually all their genes while dizygotic twins share about half, so greater similarity in IQ among monozygotic pairs raised together points to a genetic contribution.
- 3
What can adoption studies show that twin studies cannot?
Model answer
Adoption studies separate genes from rearing, because an adopted child's resemblance to their biological parents reflects shared genes while resemblance to their adoptive parents reflects the shared home environment.
- 4
Name two factors acting before birth that can lower a child's later intelligence.
Model answer
Maternal alcohol consumption and maternal malnutrition during pregnancy can both reduce a child's later measured intelligence.
- 5
How is brain size related to measured intelligence?
Model answer
Imaging studies find a modest positive correlation between overall brain volume and IQ, but the relationship is weak and correlational, so brain size does not determine intelligence.
- 6
What does the neural efficiency hypothesis claim?
Model answer
It claims that more intelligent people use less brain activity to solve a given problem, because their neural processing is better organised and more efficient.
