Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is team building?
Model answer
Team building is a planned programme of activities designed to raise a group's cohesion and effectiveness by improving its shared goals, roles, communication and relationships.
- 2
Name three ways a coach can reduce social loafing.
Model answer
The coach can record individual statistics, use video analysis of each player, and give every player a specific individual target within the team plan.
- 3
Why does recording individual statistics reduce loafing?
Model answer
Loafing depends on a player's contribution being hidden in the collective effort, so making each contribution identifiable removes the anonymity that allows effort to drop.
- 4
A hockey player works hard in training but disappears during matches. What should the coach do?
Model answer
The coach should make his match contribution visible and accountable, for example by tracking his tackles and distance covered, reviewing clips with him and agreeing a specific match role he is answerable for.
- 5
Explain the difference between role clarity and role acceptance.
Model answer
Role clarity means a player understands exactly what is expected of them, whereas role acceptance means they are willing to carry out that role even when it is not the one they wanted.
- 6
Why is it useful for a squad to set team goals as well as individual ones?
Model answer
A shared, measurable team goal gives everyone the same target to work towards, which directly builds task cohesion and stops individual aims pulling in different directions.
