Representativeness, generalisability and types of reliability
- 3 things to know
- Component 01
Overview
Recall questions on representativeness and generalisability, internal and external reliability, inter-rater, test-retest and split-half reliability, and ways to improve the reliability of observations and questionnaires.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is test-retest reliability assessed?
Suggest one way of improving the reliability of an observation.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by representativeness?
Model answer
The extent to which a sample reflects the characteristics of the target population it was drawn from.
- 2
What is generalisability?
Model answer
The extent to which the findings of a study can be applied beyond the sample to other people, settings or times.
- 3
Explain why poor representativeness limits generalisability.
Model answer
If the sample does not reflect the population, conclusions drawn from it may not hold true for anyone outside the study.
- 4
Define reliability.
Model answer
The consistency of a measure or of a set of findings, so that repeating the measurement under the same conditions gives the same result.
- 5
What is internal reliability?
Model answer
The extent to which a measure is consistent within itself, with all of its items measuring the same thing.
- 6
What is external reliability?
Model answer
The extent to which a measure produces consistent results when it is used again on separate occasions.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Data Recording, Analysis and Presentation, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
