Lee et al. (1997) evaluations of lying and truth-telling: procedure, results and conclusions
- 2 things to know
- Component 02
Overview
Recall questions on Lee et al.'s symbol scale, interview procedure and counterbalancing, separate ratings of deed and statement, the cross-cultural similarity and difference, the age pattern and its importance, and the conclusions.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What did Lee et al. conclude?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why was the scale marked with symbols rather than numbers?
Model answer
So that children as young as seven could show the strength of their judgement without needing to read or interpret numbers.
- 2
How was each child interviewed?
Model answer
Children were interviewed individually in a quiet room at school in their own language, the stories were read aloud in a counterbalanced order, and after each one the child rated the deed and then rated what the character had said.
- 3
Why were the stories presented in a counterbalanced order?
Model answer
To prevent the order in which stories were heard from systematically influencing the ratings given.
- 4
Why did children rate the deed and the statement separately?
Model answer
So that judgement of the action itself could be separated from judgement of the honesty or dishonesty of what was said about it.
- 5
What similarity was found between the two cultures?
Model answer
Children in both countries rated good deeds positively and bad deeds negatively, and in the antisocial stories both groups condemned lying and approved of telling the truth.
- 6
State the main cultural difference found.
Model answer
In the prosocial stories Chinese children rated the character who modestly denied the good deed increasingly positively and rated owning up less positively, whereas Canadian children continued to treat the denial as wrong and admitting it as right.
