- 3 things to know
- Component 03
Overview
Recall questions on the purpose of Kroll and Crenshaw's 1970 study of personality profiles in four athletic groups, the problem it addressed, the 16PF method, the athletes sampled and excluded, discriminant function analysis, and the factors contributing most.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why were some athletes who completed the questionnaire excluded from the analysis?
What problem with earlier personality research did the study set out to address?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What was the purpose of Kroll and Crenshaw's study?
Model answer
They aimed to extend earlier work on personality within single sports by comparing whole personality profiles between four different athletic groups to see whether the sports could be told apart.
- 2
What problem with earlier personality research did the study set out to address?
Model answer
Earlier work had used poorly defined samples whose sporting quality was unknown, so the study deliberately used groups of established regional and national standard.
- 3
What research method and measure did Kroll and Crenshaw use?
Model answer
They used the self-report method, administering Form A of Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire to the athletes.
- 4
Who was included in the analysis?
Model answer
A total of 387 athletes were analysed, made up of 81 American football players, 141 gymnasts, 94 wrestlers and 71 amateur karate participants, all competing at regional or national level in the USA.
- 5
How were the wrestlers in the sample selected?
Model answer
They were drawn from three quality bands, a superior group of Olympic and national tournament place winners, an excellent group of varsity performers rated highly by their coach who had won at least 60% of their matches, and an average to below-average group from four college teams.
- 6
Why were some athletes who completed the questionnaire excluded from the analysis?
Model answer
A fifteen-item lie scale was also administered, and anyone scoring seven or above on it was removed because the validity of their responses was in doubt.
